Designing Learning for Active Participation and Accountability
Authentic student engagement in mathematics requires moving beyond rote memorization and procedural compliance to a culture of active thinking and collaborative problem-solving. This approach addresses the unique challenges of math instruction by focusing on a structured lesson framework designed to build confidence, deepen conceptual understanding, and foster a positive mathematical identity.
The focus is on a purposeful lesson flow that begins with Activating Strategies to surface prior knowledge and prepare students for new concepts. It then moves into the core of the lesson with dynamic Learning Activities, where students engage in mathematical discourse, learn from mistakes through error analysis, and apply structured problem-solving frameworks. The cycle concludes with Summarizing Strategies that help students consolidate their understanding and articulate their learning. This model provides a clear pathway to transform the mathematics classroom into an environment where all students are engaged, challenged, and successful.

For the past 12 years, she has been a district curriculum specialist and transitioned to an administrative position as the Extended Learning Coordinator. She maintains her connection to teachers and students, serving as the 6-8 Math Curriculum Specialist. She is passionate about coaching teachers to leverage high-impact strategies to maximize student success intentionally.
Learning Goals

By the end of this course, you will be able to…
- Explain the dimensions of student engagement (behavioral, cognitive, emotional) as they apply to the mathematics classroom.
- Differentiate between distributed practice and massed practice to plan for long-term retention.
- Select and implement activating strategies that connect to prior mathematical knowledge and prepare students for new learning.
- Structure collaborative learning activities that promote mathematical discourse, such as Pairs Checking and Error Analysis.
- Apply problem-solving frameworks to guide students through complex tasks.
- Integrate writing and summarizing strategies to help students process and articulate their mathematical understanding.
