Vocabulary Is the Key to Learning
Why attend Vocabulary Instruction training?
What percentage of words in a text or speech do students need to know to be able to understand what they are reading or hearing? Shockingly… 95%! This percentage is even more shocking when you consider that students encounter about 180,000 new words each school year.
Teaching vocabulary systematically must be a critical aspect of instruction at every grade level, in every subject, in every school, because it is one of the most important instructional intervention practices schools can employ to close the achievement gap and raise student achievement for all students.
When schools commit to teaching vocabulary strategies, student achievement increases. This requires a proactive approach to planning and teaching vocabulary that focuses on both high yield vocabulary strategies and fun and engaging vocabulary activities.
Continuum of Vocabulary Instruction
A practical issue with comprehension and learning is that there is a profound difference in vocabulary knowledge based on factors outside the teacher's and school's control. These factors include socioeconomic status, English as a second language, and lack of experience. The most critical component is understanding that traditional vocabulary instruction does not appear to close this vocabulary gap effectively. To accelerate learning, instruction and intervention must include a system for robust vocabulary instruction.
As with all High Yield Instructional Strategies, there is a continuum of vocabulary instruction. At one end of the continuum is asking students to watch a video or complete a Frayer. At the other end is an understanding that vocabulary instruction requires a systematic approach for students to learn and utilize the vocabulary before, during, and at the end of a lesson. Accelerating Learning with Vocabulary Instruction provides an innovative way to connect strategies for teaching key content and academic terms required by the current expectations for learning.
"Prioritizing vocabulary words when I'm planning will save me so much time in the classroom. I have always given all the vocabulary words equal teaching time. Thanks for giving teachers vocabulary strategies that apply to all levels of learners."
- Teacher in Mission CISD, TX
"The trainer did a great job of teaching using the strategies. The PD was not like most because it walks the walk. I can support my colleagues with the implementation of effective vocabulary strategies."
- Teaching in Manassas City, VA
